Sometimes a back tooth can be chipped by crunching down on ice or as a result of unconsciously grinding your teeth on a nightly basis. This is even more likely to be an issue if you’ve recently struggled with enamel erosion issues.
If the chip is small minimal and the compromised area won’t appear in your smile, Dr. Bob Johnson might be able to repair the tooth with a simple amalgam dental filling.
The treatment process starts with Dr. Bob Johnson performing a thorough examination of the tooth to determine the severity of the damage. This might also include taking a few X-rays to make sure the pulp or the tooth hasn’t also been affected.  Â
Dr. Bob Johnson will then discuss your numbing options with you. This might involve injecting Novocain or some other form of procaine into your gums to help you remain comfortable throughout the treatment. Once this is done he will use a dental drill to remove any decayed tooth enamel. This leaves behind a perfectly clean surface to cement a filling.
Amalgam dental fillings are known for being durable. This material is often a preferred choice for repairing a chipped tooth enamel that will not appear in your smile. They are made from a blend of dental-grade metals, that are somewhat malleable when they are first applied and shaped.
Once the dental filling has been cured by a special ultraviolet light it will harden the amalgam material and bond it to the surrounding tooth enamel.
